Academic: The teaching and research campus (shown in red) is intended primarily for learning – and for selected supporting and campus life functions that are essential to learning.

Town / Gown: The new Heart of Campus will be the 100% location of campus, serving as a campus living room, a place to bring together some of each of the primary university functions in a location designed to attract the university and the surrounding community into positive interaction.

Residential: The surroundings of the teaching and research core (shown in yellow) are reserved primarily for student residences and student life – in an environment supportive of learning.

Recreation and Athletics: Much of the eastern and southern portions of the campus are dedicated for athletic facilities and recreation areas (shown in green). These take advantage of natural environments at the campus edges and protect the western edge from the noise and traffic of Sparkman Drive.

Support Functions: Other support functions (shown in blue) are directed toward the campus perimeter – recognizing, of course, the need for selected exceptions (including the Heart of Campus) where such uses would provide routine services to students, faculty, and staff and therefore require location near or within the core campus.
